Advancing Diabetes Care: CHMS Hosts First Accredited CME Event in Years
The Canadian Hellenic Medical Society (CHMS) was proud to host its first accredited Continuing Medical Education (CME) event in over eight years, marking a significant milestone in the organization’s renewed commitment to professional development and clinical excellence within the Hellenic medical community in Canada.
Held at Mezes in the historic Greektown of Danforth in Toronto, the event—“Transforming Type 2 Diabetes Care: Real Cases, Real Solutions for GLP-1 & GIP/GLP-1 Therapy”—brought together approximately 30 healthcare professionals for an evening of high-quality, case-based learning and collegial discussion.
A Timely and Practical Educational Focus
Given the rapidly evolving landscape of diabetes management and the multisystem consequences of the disease, CHMS identified this topic as highly relevant across specialties. The session was designed to deliver practical, evidence-based insights applicable to both primary care and specialist practice.
The audience reflected this multidisciplinary focus, with attendees including family physicians, specialists, medical residents, and medical scientists, fostering a rich and collaborative learning environment.
The session featured an engaging presentation by Dr. Jeremy Gilbert (Endocrinology, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre), who delivered a highly practical, case-based discussion on modern therapeutic strategies in type 2 diabetes. The session emphasized real-world decision-making and interactive clinical reasoning.
The discussion was expertly moderated by Dr. Maria Psihogios, who facilitated audience engagement and guided an interactive exchange of ideas throughout the evening.

Strong Engagement and Community Building
With approximately 30 attendees, the event demonstrated strong engagement and underscored the demand for accredited, high-quality educational programming within the CHMS network. Beyond the educational value, the evening provided an opportunity for attendees to reconnect, network, and strengthen professional ties within the Hellenic medical community.
“This event marks an important step in re-establishing CHMS as a hub for high-quality medical education within the Hellenic diaspora.”
— Dr. Maria Psihogios, CHMS Education & CME Director

A Renewed Commitment to CME Excellence
This event represents the beginning of a renewed and structured approach to continuing medical education within CHMS, aligned with the Society’s strategic pillar: Education & CME Excellence.
Moving forward, CHMS aims to host 2–4 accredited CME events annually, covering a range of clinically relevant and professionally enriching topics. Upcoming sessions will explore areas such as medical teaching and practice management, broadening the scope of educational offerings.
In parallel, CHMS will continue to collaborate with other Hellenic medical societies across Canada and internationally to promote hybrid CME events, ensuring accessibility and engagement for members regardless of geographic location.
