About

The Canadian Hellenic Medical Society (CHMS) traces its roots to December 6, 1983, when it was founded in Toronto as the “Hippocrates” Hellenic Canadian Medical Association of Ontario by Dr. Dimitrios Oreopoulos, Dr. Anastasios Karantonis, and Dr. Paris Philips. Their vision was to build a strong community of medical professionals of Greek origin—celebrating their achievements, promoting medical education for both professionals and the public, and fostering collaboration with the medical community in Greece.

Honouring our roots, shaping the future

Over the years, the society has hosted numerous continuing medical education (CME) events, offered health education to the Hellenic public, and raised funds to support scholarships for future physicians as well as local health initiatives such as the Hellenic Home for the Aged. A key fundraising event has been the Annual Physicians’ Gala, a cornerstone of our calendar.

In the early 2000s, the society partnered with other Hellenic professional organizations to co-host what is now known as the Hellenic Professionals’ Gala. The society’s medical student scholarship was named in memory of our esteemed founder, Dr. Dimitrios Oreopoulos, to honour his legacy.

A new board and a renewed vision

Following a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic, the society was revitalized in 2022 with a new board and a renewed vision. Our mission expanded to embrace Greek physicians and allied health professionals across Canada. Reflecting this national scope, our name was changed to the Canadian Hellenic Medical Society, with Hippocrates remaining central to our logo and identity.

Our Mission & Vision

We are committed to promoting medical education and knowledge sharing among the Hellenic medical diaspora of Canada. Our aim is to provide opportunities for our members to enhance their medical expertise and to foster a sense of community tied to our Hellenic roots.

We envision a future where Hellenic medical professionals living and practicing in Canada are well-connected, highly skilled, and positively contribute to the Canadian medical community as well as their heritage.
