A Year of Renewal and Momentum: Reflections on 2025 and Looking Ahead to 2026

As we enter 2026, the Canadian Hellenic Medical Society (CHMS) reflects on a year defined by renewal, growth, and renewed engagement with both our professional and broader Hellenic communities. The past year marked an important chapter in the Society’s evolution, strengthening our foundations while expanding our reach and impact.

Highlights from 2025

Over the past year, CHMS made meaningful progress across governance, advocacy, education, and community engagement. Among the milestones we are most proud of are:

  • Renewal of the Society’s bylaws and organizational identity, modernizing our governance structure to better reflect our growing community. This process broadened our membership framework to include allied health professionals, made membership free for students, and was accompanied by the launch of an updated logo and redesigned website to better represent the Society’s mission and values.

  • Expansion of our Board, committees, and volunteer base, now comprising 17 dedicated volunteers whose time, expertise, and commitment drive the Society’s initiatives forward.

  • Expansion of scholarship eligibility to Canadian-Hellenic medical students regardless of where they are studying, in Canada or abroad, reflecting our commitment to supporting trainees without geographic barriers.

  • Participation in the Toronto Greek Community OXI Day Parade, reaffirming CHMS’s presence and connection within the wider Hellenic community.

  • Support of Hellenic cultural initiatives, including proudly serving as the presenting sponsor of a feature film at the Greek International Film Festival Tour (GIFFT), highlighting the Society’s commitment to cultural dialogue and community engagement beyond medicine.

  • Advocacy contributing to landmark legislation in Greece, allowing for the automatic recognition of Canadian medical specialty training without additional examinations or verification committees. This represents a significant step forward for Canadian-trained physicians of Hellenic descent and underscores the importance of sustained, collaborative advocacy.

  • Hosting the first Hippocratic Week in Canada, including the Society’s first in-person gathering in several years, strengthening professional connections and reaffirming the value of coming together as a community.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Building on this momentum, CHMS enters 2026 with a strong sense of purpose and optimism. Our Education Committee is actively planning a series of continuing medical education (CME) events, and we aim to maintain a more visible and engaged presence at community events across the Greater Toronto Area and beyond.

Supporting medical trainees remains a core priority. In the coming year, we look forward to launching a mentorship program designed to connect students and residents with experienced physicians, creating meaningful opportunities for guidance and professional development. We are also preparing a webinar series focused on establishing medical practice in Greece, addressing practical topics relevant to Canadian-trained physicians exploring professional pathways abroad.

Community engagement will continue through initiatives such as supporting the Hellenic Home for the Aged, including efforts to help identify Greek-speaking physicians to meet the needs of its expanding services.

In addition, CHMS is excited to begin planning its first annual Dr. Dimitrios Oreopoulos Symposium, which will showcase local Hellenic medical research and foster academic exchange and collaboration.

Finally, 2026 marks a major milestone for the Society: the 25th anniversary of the Annual Hellenic Professionals Gala, taking place on February 28, 2026. This longstanding event remains a cornerstone of CHMS’s mission and will once again honour outstanding student scholarship recipients.

Gratitude and Moving Forward

The continued work of the Canadian Hellenic Medical Society would not be possible without the countless volunteer hours, the engagement of our members, and the generous financial support of individuals and local businesses who believe in our mission. Your support enables the Society to grow with purpose and impact.

We look forward to another year of collaboration, service, and shared progress — and much more to come.
