What is GIFFT?

GIFFT (Greek International Film Festival Tour of Canada) is a travelling film festival that brings contemporary Greek cinema to audiences across Canada. It presents a curated selection of feature films, documentaries, and shorts that showcase the diversity of Greek culture, identity, society, and storytelling. GIFFT aims to foster cultural connection, discussion, and understanding within the Greek diaspora and broader Canadian community.

About Wishbone

Directed by Penny Panagiotopoulou, Wishbone tells the story of Kostas, a security guard at a public hospital. After the sudden death of his older brother, Kostas must care for his niece, Niki, and find the means to preserve their family home. When he’s at the edge of desperation, a hospital porter offers help—but the price exacted will test Kostas’s ethics and resolve.

Why CHMS Supports Wishbone

We believe Wishbone reflects critical issues that align with CHMS’s mission — especially as they pertain to medicine, moral integrity, and the impact of social pressures on healthcare. Below are some of the central themes that CHMS would like to highlight in our support of and engagement around this film:

  • Medical Ethics and Moral Dilemmas: The film raises powerful questions about honesty, integrity, and what a person or professional might sacrifice under extreme circumstances.
  • Socioeconomic Pressure and Health: The struggle Kostas faces to provide for his family and protect his home underscores how financial hardship and social inequality can put healthcare professionals (and all people) into ethically precarious positions.
  • Trust in the Patient‑Provider Relationship: When false testimony or malpractice comes into play, the ripple effects include eroded trust—among patients, within institutions, and in society at large.
  • Duty, Family, and Sacrifice: The personal responsibilities Kostas takes on—both to his niece and to the legacy of their home—pose reflections on what people are willing to do for family, and at what cost.
